Atlas Materials Produces High Purity Magnesium Metal
Delaware — Atlas Materials announces the production of high purity magnesium metal from magnesium oxide made using its proprietary Atlas Process.
This milestone validates the versatility and technical readiness of the Atlas Process to produce multiple high-value critical minerals, including magnesium, nickel, and cobalt, from an integrated platform.
Magnesium metal is a vital input for aluminum alloys and is widely used in the automotive, aerospace, steel, and defense sectors. It is also recognized as a critical mineral by the U.S. Government, the European Union, and other Western governments.
The zero-waste Atlas Process unlocks high-purity magnesium products from magnesium-, nickel-, and cobalt-rich saprolite ore — a resource previously considered uneconomic for such applications. From a single feedstock, Atlas can now produce a range of magnesium products, including magnesium metal, as well as nickel and cobalt unlocking a cost-effective, scalable, and resilient solution for strengthening domestic critical minerals supply chains.
The magnesium oxide was produced in partnership with Andritz, a global leader in pyrohydrolysis technology, and converted to magnesium metal through aluminothermic reduction at a facility operated by Big Blue Technologies.
David Dreisinger, CEO of Atlas Materials, commented:
“Producing magnesium metal from high-purity oxide proves the Atlas Process can scale to deliver critical minerals — magnesium, nickel, and cobalt — efficiently and competitively. With an expanded product portfolio, Atlas is ready for commercial scale-up, enabling resilient, secure supply chains powered by breakthrough technology.”
